Fiji Budget and Backpacker Accommodation

Fiji Islands has always been popular with backpacking travellers, whether single, couples or small groups. Fiji offers a number of budget hotels and hostels for backpacking holidays. One of the main reasons is that Fiji is on a good round-the-world air route, so if budget-minded tourists are in transit on longer journeys, this means that they can easily access the country. And what a great stopover! Once arrived in Nadi, they also find that backpacking accommodation is available in most regions and that there is a good transport infrastructure. This means that they are able to travel around the islands and experience all that Fiji has to offer.

In Nadi, starting point for low-cost travellers, there are a number of hostels and dorm set ups, so budget accommodation is easy to find. Due to increasing demand, there has also arisen the introduction of a greater number of private rooms as not all budget travellers wish to share large dormitories. Nadi is a great base for exploring the other parts of Fiji, and budget accommodation operators often have luggage storage so that you can leave some of your possessions here and travel lighter while in Fiji. With the warm climate, it isn't necessary to carry a great deal of warm clothing, though one long-sleeved sweater is useful for evenings, especially during the months from May to October. There are buses to travel right around the main island, so heading south out of Nadi via the Queen's Highway check out some of the options such as Robinson Crusoe Island, the BeacHouse, and Raintree Lodge in Suva. For something a bit different, catch the inter-island ferry from Suva up to Savusavu and then to Taveuni, where camping at Beverly's Beach is cheap and a good base to explore Taveuni island. There are also budget bures there.

Returning to Nadi from Suva via the King's Road on the east, Volivoli Beach Resort up near Nananu-i-Ra is a good option. And of course, Nananu-i-Ra itself is easy to get to from Ellington Wharf and has some great beachfront budget places there. Outer islands? Catch the Yasawa Flyer from Port Denarau in Nadi. This bright yellow catamaran ferry runs daily up to the Yasawas, dropping off and picking up passengers at all the budget resorts along the way. Not to be missed.
